I went into the hospital on November 17th to be induced and Dr.Yin broke my water around 12.30pm. I walked around the labor and delivery floor for a while to try and bring my contractions closer together but there was little success. Finally, they started pitocin. I labored with irregular contractions on through the night. Some contractions were 3 mins apart, some were 5 mins apart, it was strange. Some contractions were more and than less painful. It was very different from my other 2 deliveries. Finally around 10:45 I asked for the epidural and recieved it sometime around 11:15 or so. I was able to relax and get a bit of rest. I even sent my sister home to get some rest because I assumed it would be many more hours of labor before I delivered (boy was I wrong). When I came into the hospital, I was 3cm dialated and when I asked for the epidural I was only 5cm dialated. If you do the math, that means that I only dialated 2 cm in almost 10 hours. Well, just after my sister left the hospital, I started to feel sick. My stomach was swirling and I began to get the shakes. The nurse came in and said "there is no way that you could be fully dialated"! She checked me and sure enough, I had gone from 5cm to a full 10 cm in a matter of 45 mins! Holy cow! She called the Dr. immediatedly and just as my sister had arrived home and her layed her head down to sleep, her phone rang and she raced back to the hospital. As soon as my sister walked through the door, the nurse said, "ok, lets try pushing" (little did she know that I am a rock star at pushing out a baby) and with the first push, that baby's head began to crown and she then immediately told me to not push anymore. We waited for the Dr, and as she walked in and plopped down to catch the baby, I pushed 2 more times and out she came and into the world was born Kherrington! I pushed for about 5 mins. Rock star! Her poor little face was bruised from coming out so fast. We coo'd over her and how tiny she was and how we loved her brown hair. We were happy parents of a brand new baby girl. My sister left to go home and get some sleep, and then the complications began....(here comes the scary part and is not for the squimish to read). I began to feel sick. Not a little sick but extrememly sick. The room was spinning around me and I felt that I might vomit at any moment. I felt weak and started getting the chills and my body was shaking a bit. As I began to tell my nurse that I wasn't feeling well, this machine alarm went off, alerting the nurses that my blood pressure had fallen drastically low. I turned white and began to black out. As I came to, there was a nurse standing over me and waving smelling salts in my face. And I all of a sudden had an urge to push and since the nurses encouraged me to, I did. With no success. What was giving me the urge to push was a very large blood clot. A nurse came over and pressed on my stomach and out came a huge blood clot, followed by an ocean of blood. the asked to the other nurses to page the Dr. and get her into there asap. When the doctor arrived, she sat down and immediately went to work. She reached in and pulled out about half a dozen blood clots. It took several hours to get the bleeding under control but once the did, I was able to go to the recovery mother and baby floor. And I slid by without needing a blood transfusion. They kept me in the hospital another day just to monitor my recovery.
So I have now been home from the hospital for 4 days and am still in incredible pain. I went to the dr. again and came to realise that I was running a small fever and had an infection in my uterus. She gave me her firm advice and strongly cautioned me that I must wait 2 years before even trying for another baby. She said that she didn't want to scare me but that if she hadn't made it there in time, I would have bled out and I wouldn't have made it. That's how woman used to die in childbirth and that next time, I may not be so lucky.
So there you go, my longwinded story of how Kherrington came into the world!
