Mommy's last picture

I look at this picture and not only does her beauty shine forth but I can just see her wonderful spirit. I lost my absolute best friend on August 16th 2012. I never thought those words would leave my mouth. I appoligize to be so graphic but I cant stop reliving the horror of being woke up at 2 in the morning by my sister becasue the babies were crying and sharla wasnt getting up to feed them only to find out my wife was no longer there in spirit. I love her so much. and the moment I held her I knew she was gone. I felt so hopeless, I knew I would never see or talk to her ever again in this life. I did get that last moment with her before I went to bed. You see we were out of town at my sisters house in Camarillo. We were on vacation and going to Disneyland the next day. She had discovered that night that she had a Kidney stone. 8 mm she tells me on the phone. I could quite comprehend exactly how big that was. She tells me that it is about the size of a grape. Then she tells me the doctor prescibed her this new medication she had never heard of. She never stood a chance and the medication was just to strong for her. I lost my wife. That evening before bed I was sleeping on the couch next to my 3 girls who were on a blow up matress next to me. Sharla was to sleep in the other room with my sister and the twins in the pack-n-play. She said she had missed me so much that day (she had been stuck in the VA hospital for over 6 hours having tests ran) She layed next to me on the couch and snuggled me. We were so excited for the next day to go to Disneyland and talked about the new cars land and how excited that we were finally going to see it. I started to doze off after about 15 minutes and she asked me if she wanted to let me go to bed. I had said yes and she then told me that she was wide awake and was going to lay on the floor n my sisters room so that she wouldn't disturb my sister and just veg out on the laptop. That was the last time I saw her alive.
After writing that just now I froze and just stared at the screen. The images just keep playing in my head. I cant help but think, "what could I have done better? What could have changed? Why was I so selfish to want to go to bed when I hadnt seen my wife all day long and all she wanted was a little bit of time with me? My sister had offered to switch me and her sleep on the couch so I could be in bed with her and the only reason I said that I would take the couch is because I know Sharla had a hard time sleeping at night and would want to be on her laptop and I needed it to be completely dark in the room or I couldnt sleep. If we would have only known what the otehr name for the medication that they gave to her was or if they would have done any patient teaching about the medication, would she have taken it? That day the VA had offered to let her stay at their sleep clinic because they wanted to monitor her seep because she had had so many issues being able to sleep. Would she still be alive if she had just said yes? So many questions and "what if's" But I know that I cannot focus on that. I know I cant wonder about questions that will never have an answer. I feel sick. I feel almost like I am standing in front of a split in the worls with a thousand different ways to go and I have to chose right then and only one will not take me to certain doom. Sharla I need you now more than ever. It is kinda weird to say, but I need to now to hold me and help me mourn your death.
I cant be all negative even though I do believe I have ever right too. I need to heal and being negative and sad all the time will just make me even more alone. I cannot push away the ones I love. I can't be afraid to accept help. I cant be afraid to cry in front of anyone but my kids. Sharla fulfilled her promise she made to the lord before this life and I believe that I in a way knew what was to happen in this life and I accepted that because of some reason I do not know yet. Yesterday I had one of the greatest experiances of my life. I had called my Bishop of the church to come over to give me a blessing. As he had laid his hands on my head and gave me a blessing I remember thinking I need to listen to ever word he says for inspiration. That only lasted seconds as my mind wandered off and instantly without a doubt felt her lean in front of my where I was sitting in that chair and slip her hands through my arms around my waist and hug me tightly with her head on my chest. It felt just as real as it had in real life. Not even a few seconds later without warning or word, my daughter Delaney walked in, knelt in front of me, put her arms through my arms around my waist and hugged me tightly with her head agaist my chest. I teared up. I felt as if it were Sharla. I knew then she was there with me.
Yesterday I had to chose where in the cemetary to place my wife. I thought picking a location wouldn't be that difficult, boy was I wrong. I spent what felt like eternity trying to find the best place for her. Then it came to me. She was to be buried in the Military section and there was a huge memorial with all the different services flags flying. Where that memorial is and where it meets the sidewalk I started to walk in one direction and took 12 steps. Then I turned towards the grass and took 24 steps. 12/24 her birthday. It just felt right. I had thought originally doing the year we got married, but thought taking 2006 steps might be a much and wouldn't be in the cemetary anymore.
So we have this picture. The last picture I ever took of Sharla. She looks so happy and I know that she is just as happy where she is at now. Many of my family and friends have said that they have already felt her presence and some have even said that they have heard her voice tell them not to worry, that she is happy where she is at. I will carry on this blog, and will make sure that the prior family continues. Our story may not physically have her in it, but I know that everything we do and say will include her spiritually. Rest in Peace my love. The kids will know who you were and the many lives you touched. The support has already been tremedous and I know that it will continue. I will have days where I will hurt as if there is no tomorrow. I wil have days where I will just want to be held and comforted. I will even have days where I might curse Sharla for leaving us. But I know that in all of these days, one thing wil always be true, My love for you is everlasting and will continue to grow for you.
I then see this picture. The only picture that I can recall that had all 7 of us in it. I will treasure this picture and this will help me remember tht we are an eternal family. We are sealed together which means that in death we are all bound to each other and we will continue to be together after this life. I was once told that this life is just the stepping stone to get to where our life really begins. In the eternities together. Our life here is just to prepare us for what is to come.I believe that and no one will ever take that away from me. If I don't have that belief and hope, then I really have nothing to live for. Thank you to everyone that has touched our lives. I say our becasue I may have not have known you personally. But from your stories, I have learned so much. I want to know everything about Sharla. I know there was so much that even after 7 years I didn't know about her. Please tell me it all. Every story you have of her. There will never be enough, I promise.

Mike you are an amazing person to be able to do all that you are even doing right now. I cannot believe about the VA and the meds. If that was what the cause was is no surprise though. After we heard the awful news about Sharla's passing, and my kids were really worried and asked why she died. We said we didn't know. Then ALani (natie's age-5) says " mom Sharla died because she had a reaction to some medicine". I looked at her like how on earth do you know that? But the little ones are so in tune, that I told her, you may be right.

My story of Sharla isn't a long one, and you know most of it; but, I'll write it down so that you can share with the kids that she touched so many people.

I still remember the day I met your family when you came in for your intake for Natalie at the center. I was in awe of how you guys could handle, at that time, three kids 2 years old and younger.

As the months went by there was a pattern that developed. You and Sharla would pick up the girls while Sharla and I chatted and you played with the kids, usually soccer. Technically, Sharla and I weren't supposed to chat and I was supposed to deter any conversation, but some days I just didn't.

Sharla chatted with me about anything and everything and we got along well. We joked that if I ever left the center we'd probably be good friends.

We bonded over a shared love of Disney and when she found out Briano and I were starting pin collecting, she brought us a ton of Winnie the Pooh pins to start us off.

Sharla was such an open person and there were days when she would pick up that I could tell she'd had a rough day and I understood her well enough that sometimes she'd ask for a hug or I'd just know and volunteer.

Your last day at the center, she brought in a gift bag in the middle of the morning for me. She said she brought it early so she didn't have to do it later and cry. It was a bunch of Nightmare Before Christmas goodies and just this morning my 3 month old was mesmerized by the large Jack Skellington doll she gave to us.

About a month ago I friended her on facebook, knowing that I wouldn't be going back to the center. It's just a shame she's gone so soon.

It might seem like a daunting task; but, I know you can do this Michael. If anything, I know Delaney will help a lot :) She's always been a helper.

So, that's my story, and it might be a short one; but, share it with the kids someday to highlight that their momma could make friends with anyone and that she was always thoughtful and kind.

Thank you for sharing your story and for being so honest and real. My heart and love goes out to you and your children. I know with ever fiber of my being, that God will be with you and your family. He will lift you up and see you through. Never lose faith and know that Sharla will be there watching over you all and someday you will meet again.

Michael - I have been bawling all week because of what you have been through. My heart is absolutely broken for you and your children. I can't even begin to imagine the pain that you are going through right now. As you know, I have never met Sharla. But I feel like I've gotten to know her a little bit as I've read your comments and her comments on FB throughout the years. She seems like such an amazing person! After reading things, I would always think "man, Elder Prior sure picked the most perfect person for him." You two were made for each other!!!

I always thought you were an amazingly strong Elder on the mission. But I'll tell you what - my opinion of what a strong person you are has been even heightened as I read through this blog. I am in awe at your strength and ability to write this now. Thank you for sharing. Even though I never knew Sharla, I appreciated hearing this story. I'm sorry that you have to live with so many "what ifs". I'm sorry that you feel guilt for not staying up. I hope, with time, you can put that guilt aside.

I thought it was so neat as I thought back on the pancakes you made her last week and the ring that was resized the week before. Like I said, you two were perfect for each other. But I was struck with the obvious inspiration that you were given to buy her the third ring for "eternity." What a neat symbol that you can reflect on now and especially through the hard days.

I just want you to know how much I admire your strength. I don't think I would be able to write something like this, let alone write with such reverence and love, as you have done. What an honor to her legacy! Thank you for being that great example to me and all the other people that love you and will be reading this! Your kids are VERY lucky to have you as a dad. Make no mistake about that!

Michael, I am so sorry that a prescription drug took Sharla from you and the kids. My husband lost his best friend in February, 2008, who died in his sleep from pills, and his father in May 2009, who also died in his sleep, two days after his doctor changed his blood pressure medication.

Please try not to question if there is anything you could have done differently. This was not Sharla's fault, and it was not your fault. Sharla is a victim. Far too many people are losing their lives to prescription drugs and I am devastated to learn that is what took Sharla from you.

I read just now that 300% more people die from prescribed drugs each year than from illegal drugs; 100,000 Americans each year. I feel like we can all honor Sharla's memory by educating others and being aware for ourselves about how dangerous prescription drugs can be. I hope that the doctor who prescribed Sharla that medication learns from this experience, and I personally want to write to the makers of that drug and let them know who Sharla was and what their new drug took away from this world too early.

Just one memory I have of Sharla is working with her to create cupcakes for her expecting friends baby shower. Oh, how she wanted everything to be just right! Hundreds of teeny tiny cupcakes, each one a gift. A tiny hint at the love she had for others and the importance she placed on celebrating motherhood. I can see her warm smile now that reached all the way to her eyes.

This story has moved me very much! I have known Sharla since 7th grade and she was always a caring person! I could tell se loved her family very much. She was the definition of truely happy. She will be missed but her spirit lives on and now she's watching her family from heaven. My heart and prayers goes out to the family her wonder, loving, caring family.

Mike, I don't know you at all, but I met your wife once. I have started collecting stories of her. I am planning to print them out and give them to your family as a book. If you would like to see what I have collected so far you can go to http://www.awomanwholived.com/2012/08/what-i-learned-from-sharla/

Also, if you want to direct people there to tell stories then I can have more to print so your kids will always have something tangible full of stories of their mama. Or else, I will just come here to this post and collect stories that I find in the comments. Either way works for me. I just want your kids who are so small to have lots of things to remember their mom by.

I wanted it to be a surprise, but felt I should tell you now.

Love and big huge hugs from me and my family.

Michael,
Shar (as those of us in the Army knew her) was an amazing and viberant woman. Even in a combat zone she had a uniuqe talant for walking into any room and brightening it. Whenever my duties took me back to Tikrit I could always count on Shar draging me and Dustin to go workout or go for a run...irregardless of how hot it was or how many days we had been up. As you probably know...when Shar had her mind made up there really wasn't anything you could do but go along with her. She has made more of an impact, in some cases on people she didn't even know, than anyone could ever comprehend. She has made a difference in her community, in her counrty, and throughout the world. Her memory will live on in the hearts of many. I am thnakful that I had the opportunity to know her.

My name is Summer Zierenberg Kellogg (from Moorpark, CA). I am so sorry for your loss. I never met Sharla, but from what I've read and heard about her from those who love her, she was/is amazing. I'm not sure you know Kelly Spangler, but I know Sharla did. Kelly's brother, Don, is actually married to one of my sisters, so I know Kelly well and love her. I lost one of my sisters when she was 30 in her sleep... leaving behind her husband and four young children. It has been hard and we miss her so much, but our testimonies of the gospel have been strengthened, our faith in the Atonement and Resurrection solidified, and our gratitude for the sealing power immeasurable. My brother-in-law who lost my sister has had a rough road, but he's been strong and okay, and you will be, too. Someday we will all understand why these things happen. For a mother to leave her children so young, God must have a greater plan in mind. I hope you find comfort in knowing He'll guide you and take care of you, and that Sharla is with you, helping you, comforting you, and loving you even more than she did while here on earth. Good job for being brave enough to express your true feelings. That is a step in the right direction, for sure. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your little ones.

Hello, You don't know me, but I came across information about Sharla on Facebook, and then found her blog. I just wanted to let you know that there are more people than you know who are hurting for you and your darling children and lifting you up in prayer. My family and I will be praying for you everyday. God is still good and will be by your side all the way.
